Harmonic Mechanics: The Physics of Piano

When I was very young,  I started to play the piano. Whenever I heard the beautiful music my fingers made,  I always wondered how the piano did it. So I opened the lid to find out. When my finger presses a key,  it is the start of a complex sequence of actions. The key is connected to a system of levers,  which are connected to a hammer.The force exerted by my finger is transferred to the hammer. The amount of force applied to the hammer determines the speed at which the hammer strikes the strings.  A harder strike will produce a greater amplitude,  resulting in a louder sound,  while a softer touch will produce a gentler,  softer tone. The striking of the string causes it to vibrate. These vibrations,  which are governed by the principles of wave mechanics,  create sound waves. The frequency of these vibrations determines the pitch of the note. Longer strings produce lower pitches,  while shorter strings produce higher pitches.
