School: mamaroneck high school This picture was taken in Mexico, inside a cave. The water inside this cave is still and smooth, so the light shining from our flashlights reflects off of the surface of the water and creates a reflection of what is around it, called a regular reflection. Reflection occurs when waves of light travel to different mediums, like from air to water, as there is an index of refraction during this change. Refraction is the change in speed of wavelengths as they pass through different mediums. The reflection on water allows waves of light to bounce off of the surface and to our eyes, allowing us to see the cave reflected in the water. Rays of light are how we can see things around us, so the light on the water allows us to see what is around it on the surface. Since we are in a cave, the roof of the cave is mirrored in the water and creates this scene of symmetry.
