School: glenbard west high school This past weekend, while working on my golf swing, I hit a tee out from under the ball and realized the ball landed in the same place. So I set up my camera to capture this photo of the golf ball being unaffected by the swing as I hit the tee right out from underneath the ball. The moment I got this photo was directly after the tee was hit out from under the ball, and the ball is still at rest. I noticed that it is Newton's first law of motion. Inertia helped capture this photo by showing how if an object is at rest, it will stay at rest until acted upon by an outside force. This is what is happening to the ball; it is still at rest before the acceleration due to gravity starts to move it down to earth. Because I am a beginner, it took a few attempts to get this photo. I had to make sure that I did not hit anything but the tee because the force of the golf club would make the ball fly into the air, not keeping it at rest, so I couldn't get the photo. This concept of the tee and the golf ball is very similar to an object on a trampoline; when you bounce the trampoline, the object stays at rest before falling due to gravity. So with the help of inertia, Newton's first law of motion, I was able to capture this outstanding photo. |
