School: wayne hills high school When the gunpowder inside the firework's tube goes through combustion, it produces hot gases that rapidly expand and expel downward. According to Newton's third law, the force of these gases firing downward creates an equal and opposite force that propels the firework upward into the sky. The firework launched goes through an explosion reaction due to which conservation of momentum can be applied here (momentum of the combined masses of the particles of metals is the combined momentum of each particle of metal right after the explosion). The emission of visible light is due to heat and combustion- The hot components in a firework radiate heat energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. Metal salts commonly used in fireworks determine the color of the light produced during combustion/production of heat. Some include strontium carbonate (red fireworks), calcium chloride (orange fireworks), sodium nitrate (yellow fireworks), barium chloride (green fireworks), and copper chloride (blue fireworks). |
