This card structure is made by balancing cards against each other at an angle to make the forces balanced. The friction between the table and the cards,  and the cards and the other cards,  keeps them in place. The cards cannot stand up by themselves,  so they have to be placed at an angle. This is so that the horizontal component of the force of gravity has the same magnitude as the friction force. Then the forces are equal in magnitude,  and the structure stands. Each direction of the structure's forces have to be balanced. In the y-direction,  normal force and the vertical component of gravity have to be equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. In the x-direction,  the force of static friction between the cards and between the cards and the table have to be equal to the horizontal component of gravity. Because the forces are all balanced,  the net force is zero,  and the structure stands.
