Myopia Glasses DistortionMichael LorenzAward: Top 100
School: central valley christian academy By first glance, the photo looks as if there are three hands each holding an object. Two holding a pair of distorted glasses each, and a phone in the third. However, after closer examination it is revealed that there are only two hands and a single pair of glasses. It is a simple reflection in a mirror, but what makes the picture look so odd is because of how the glasses make everything that is in front of it appear to be smaller than it really is. The cause of why the glasses are affecting the reflection in the mirror is because they are concave lenses. The purpose of these lenses are to help a person who is nearsighted (myopia), which is when the cornea of the eye refracts away the incoming light too much, which results in the image forming in front of the retina. So concave lenses are used to diverge the light rays before they reach the cornea, which causes the lights to converge on the retina to create a clear image. But because these concave lenses diverge light away, this results in an image that appears smaller because the light rays don't meet together to form an image. So by distancing the glasses away from you, while also continuing to look through them shows how concave lenses diverge the light rays, which makes the images look smaller than they really are. |
