A Moment in Times Square

In the hustle and bustle of New York City,  a taxi cruising through a busy intersection might seem like an ordinary moment. But behind this seemingly simple scene lies an entire mixture of physics,  art,  and photographic techniques. This photo,  taken on a Monday morning,  displays a NYC taxi cruising through a busy intersection. Normally,  when you take a photo of an automobile cruising down the road,  it would be blurry while the background would be in focus. However,  moving the camera with the car as you take the photo results in the car being in focus while the background is blurry. All of this boils back down to the shutter speed of the camera. Every time you mash the shutter button on a camera,  the shutter opens,  revealing light to the sensor. Which then processes the light and turns it into the photo you want. However,  by altering the shutter speed,  you can change how long the sensor is exposed to light and therefore alter your photos. A longer shutter speed would result in more light getting captured by the sensor,  while a faster shutter speed would result in less light reaching the sensor. In this photo,  by utilizing a 1/60 of a second shutter speed and moving the camera with the motion of the taxi,  I was able to capture a blurry background with a taxi in focus. This image doesn't just portray a moment - it portrays the rhythm of a city constantly on the move.
