It's Elementary, ReallyYahya SalmanAward: Top 100
School: redlands high school And it is! Literally! These stunning flames were contrived by burning various elements, all of which produce different colored flames: lithium (red), isopropyl alcohol (orange), sodium chloride (yellow), borax (green), methanol (blue), potassium chloride (purple), and epsom salt (white). When burned, electrons in these substances are excited, jumping to higher energy levels and releasing their excess energy as photons of specific wavelengths, resulting in the variation of colors. Each element has a unique spectrum that it emits, due to variation in the exact execution and size of these jumps. The flame produced is a combination of all of the different wavelengths of light emitted by the element. Any discrepancies in color noted in the flames may be due to the impurity of these chemical samples or variation in how the light was adapted into the photo. |
