School: minnetonka high school This photo illustrates the delicate balance between all the objects in the system, working together to stay in equilibrium. The normal and friction forces work in the neck of the bottle, keeping the eye hook from falling, and a few centimeters away the spring force in the mechanism of the lantern is counteracting some of the gravity. Above all of it, the tension in the rope keeps it all from crashing down. Looking only at the balance between the two sides of the chain, counteracting each other with their own gravitational forces within the system. And yet, they work together to balance with the lantern on the other side of the bottle, changing drastically depending on what the system is. Just the chain, both sides trying to fall through, held back by a normal force? The bottle, the chain and the lantern, chain and lantern trying desperately to knock it their way, but nullifying each other's efforts? Or the bottle, chain, lantern and rope, the gravity of everything pulling down while the rope strains to keep everything afloat. In short, while all of these separate things look like they'll inevitably crash to the ground, when you consider them all a system, they work in tandem to prevent that exact outcome. |
