Seeing Sounds: Chladni's Magical Patterns

Have you ever wondered if you could see sound? Fascinated by both sound waves and graphic design,  I wanted to experiment with combining music,  visual art,  and geometry. The Chladni Plate,  invented by physicist and musician Ernst Chladni,  does just that. By inputting sound waves of different frequencies into a thin plate,  the nodes and antinodes of the wave vibrate the sand sprinkled on top to create visually appealing patterns. Since nodes and antinodes are respectively the highest and lowest pressure points on the surface,  sand on the plate moves away from antinodes,  towards the nodal lines. This phenomenon occurs as the amplitude of the antinodes are at maximum while the amplitudes at nodes are at zero. Sand collects where there is no vibration at the nodal lines. As the location of the nodes changes depending on the frequency,  they form patterns known as the Chladni figures,  of which 8 are showcased in this photo. Yet,  not every frequency generates a visually appealing pattern. When Chladni first discovered the patterns,  he used a bow to generate sound waves at frequencies that naturally resonated with the plate. However,  I was using a signal generator. Therefore,  through trial and error,  I discovered that the shapes are the most clear,  coherent,  and beautiful at the resonating frequencies of 163 Hz,  225 Hz,  457 Hz,  529 Hz,  630 Hz,  1022 Hz,  1240 Hz,  and 1368 Hz.
