Like Oil and WaterJohn SkeltonAward: Top 100
School: woodinville high school - woodinville, wa In environmental science class, I learned that the immiscibility of oil and water made it easier to clean up. It wasn't until I got up close in photography that I realized the beauty in the separation. This photo shows the immiscibility of oil and water in a way that adds three light sources, white lights covered in brightly colored paper. The harsh lines at the edges of the droplets are emphasized by the different colors. This is caused by refraction, when light changes direction and bends when passing between two mediums of different density. This is caused by light coming in at an angle changing speed at slightly different times to other parallel waves. Because the lights were coming from below, the area of droplets that was opposite from the light source would bend the light at the right angle to be seen. This is especially apparent in the smaller central droplets which have all three colors on the opposite side that the corresponding color is coming from, almost looking like a setting icon in Adobe Lightroom. Even the larger circles of oil have well-defined edges of their color due to a combination of refraction and reflection, changing the direction that the light is moving in. |
