This Glass Has BonesHudson StepperAward: Top 100
School: trinity school This homemade X-ray of a wine glass is a result of refraction. The curved shadow with bright lines is caused by light bending as it passes through the curved surface of the glass and water. The two darkened bands extend from the base of the shadow because light passing through the thick curved base of the glass bends inward. The curved shape acts like a lens, bending the light into concentrated and diluted areas so that there are narrow regions where light reaches the surface, forming those distinct shadow lines. The lines in the shadow of the glass are actually tiny ripples and imperfections in the glass itself from the manufacturing process and the tiny dots are air bubbles between the lines of glass. When you shine a bright light at a low angle, these small features scatter and redirect the light, making them visible on the paper even though you can't see them in normal lighting. Basically, the glass and water act like a projector, acting as a lens for the light to travel through and reveal what's usually hidden! |
