Undrinkable cocktail
Two reasons behind this photo's name:
1. Visual misguidance
2. Refraction of light
At first glance, the black line might look like a straw inside the glass. But look again, and you'll see that it is actually a horizontal line drawn on a paper. It is not a real straw, so you can't quite drink through it, hence its name.
The second reason is more towards physics.
First, I created a density tower using four substances with different densities: dish soap, water, corn oil, then ethyl alcohol.
I then drew a straight diagonal line on an A4 paper and positioned it behind the glass, so that the top portion of the line came out of the top of the glass like a straw. What I found was simply breathtaking.
I observed that the portion of the diagonal line directly behind the glass flipped horizontally. The physics behind this is the refraction of light. The convex lens shape of the cylindrical cup triggers the light entering the glass to bend inwards and flip the object behind it. The object, in this case, is the diagonal line.
However, the flipped line was not straight, but wavy. This is due to each substance having different densities and different refractive indices. The boundary line between each column of the density tower breaks down the diagonal line, and some make the line disconnected entirely, making the cocktail impossible to come out through the "straw", which concludes the second reason behind the name of this photograph.
