Splish SplashRiley MacArthurAward: Top 100
School: montgomery blair high school When you are eight years old, there is nothing like the soft patter of the first spring rain. You grab your jacket, boots, and rush outside. Then, you see it. A nice juicy puddle. You take a deep breath, a running start, and push yourself off the ground. As gravity pulls your body back down, your rubber boots break the surface of the shallow pool and exert a downwards force. This force pushes the water out from underneath your feet, causing it to "splash" out. A few more attempts will teach you that the higher you jump, the more gravitational potential energy you have, the more kinetic energy you have coming down, the more momentum you will have to transfer to the puddle, and the bigger that "splash" will be. You giggle with glee as the large droplets, held together by surface tension, spray all over your older sister who is taking photos for her physics class instead of "splish splash"-ing around with you. |
