The Lens of History

In science,  lenses and microscopes allow use to observe beyond ordinary vision. Cells,  crystals,  and hidden structures become visible when light is bent and enlarged. In this photograph of a Zitkala-Ša quarter taken on my iPhone 12 Pro,  a small convex lens placed over the camera refracts light as it passes between air and glass,  bending rays toward a focal point so the smallest of details can resolve and become visible. The image,  focused at the center and gradually blurred toward the perimeter,  depicts Zitkala-Ša's braid through an imperfectly aligned lens. This band of clarity reflects the photograph's overarching message–that magnification can reveal what ordinary sight leaves unresolved,  but it can also distort the fuller image,  reminding us that closer vision requires careful interpretation.

This interplay between clarity and distortion reflects Zitkala-Ša's life as a Yankton Dakota writer,  educator,  and activist. As a child,  she was taken to a boarding school that attempted to erase her culture through measures including the forced cutting of her hair. The lens's focus on her braid thus becomes intentional as it symbolizes the Indigenous identity and female voice institutions tried to suppress. In centering this detail,  the image underscores how she fought to preserve Native identity while advocating for women's rights and self-representation. Like a microscope in science,  social study must magnify what society overlooks: the people,  histories,  and injustices blurred by dominant narratives. Zitkala-Ša's legacy reminds us that truth is preserved by examining carefully,  adjusting the lens,  and restoring depth to neglected stories.
