The Cost of Clarity

"Lake Wānaka. The willow stands in water so still it disappears into its own reflection. I waited three hours for this perfection--no wind,  no ripple,  surface roughness below 500 nanometers. Just enough for visible light to obey the law of reflection: angle in,  angle out,  tree doubled.

Then ducks arrived. Their wakes tilted the surface past the critical angle. Specular reflection shattered into diffuse scattering. The image broke not by accident,  but by physics--any disturbance larger than a wavelength destroys the mirror.

I felt a strange loss. The perfect photo was also a dead lake. No duck,  no fish,  no breath. The tree's clarity required stillness; the ducks' joy required motion. Two truths,  mutually exclusive.

The clouds parted. Mie scattering gave gray; Rayleigh stole the mountains. Light told the same story: to see far,  the air must be empty. To see near,  it must dance.

I kept both photos. The sharp one hangs on my wall. The broken one reminds me: life disturbs,  and that is its physics."
